Protect the EU
25 March 2017. 7.00 p.m.
St. Agnes, Alexandrinenstraße 118-121
On 25 March 1957, the Treaties of Rome - the basis of today's European Union - were signed. On the occasion of this 60th anniversary, an event will be held at St. Agnes on 25 March 2017 to address questions about the future of the European Union. In cooperation with morePlatz, the KÖNIG GALERIE, which is based in St. Agnes, set an example last year when a EUROPA light installation was mounted on the façade of the former church.
Europe is facing a turning point and it is important not to leave the field to the pessimists - not least the election results in the Netherlands showed this once again impressively. The decisions on the ballot in France and Germany in 2017 will have an impact on the living conditions of many Europeans.
It is important to emphasise this, especially since citizens' identification with the EU seems to have been lost in recent years. A common European identity, however, can curb current nationalist tendencies and develop a future for the European Union. The effect of 'Europeanisation', the rethinking from national to continental identity, is the central idea here.
The concrete question of how one's own actions can contribute to a new European identity will be addressed by the following guests at the event:
Kristoff Ritlewski and Daniel Röder have launched "Pulse of Europe", a movement that advocates the further development of the EU and demonstrates the preservation of the alliance in 30 cities across Europe. http://pulseofeurope.eu
Maryam Zaree - together with her artist colleagues Gwen Pare and Anna de Carlo - staged a scenario for Europe 2055 in a TED Talk in Vienna and asked the question from the future: What have you done and what have you not done? https://youtu.be/XXHITetACnY?t=2m5s
Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton personally contributed to the realisation of the Europe installation on the façade of St. Agnes as sponsors. As architects, they have many years of experience in designing large-scale spaces.http://www.sauerbruchhutton.de
Wolfgang Tillmans has aptly and clearly visualised the European idea with his poster campaign for Britain to remain in the EU. On the occasion of the EU anniversary and the elections in the Netherlands, France and Germany, Tillmans has relaunched the campaign together with partner organisations. Translated into all 24 official languages of the EU, the posters can be downloaded from the campaign partners' websites, printed out and shared on social networks. http://www.sauerbruchhutton.de
The aim of the event is to draft concrete ideas and proposals for the improvement and further development of the EU and (ideally) to bring them into politics. Klaus Lederer, Senator for Culture of the City of Berlin, is the contact person for this round.
