Text of the jury statement
An important current topic in Munich is the possible redensification of large inner courtyard spaces bordered by existing buildings. The result of a planning competition was a convincing inner courtyard development with three structures on polygonal ground plans in the context of the adjoining listed building to the north, the Church of St. Gabriel. A new building project whose main task was to strengthen the character of the courtyard and let both the new and the existing residential buildings benefit from it. The valuable tree population was also included in the planning. The two free-standing large buildings each contain flats, the third building is used as a children's house and is attached to the fire wall of the listed building at Einsteinstr. 135 in the south of the courtyard. The new buildings were given façades of double-skin masonry made of banded, light-coloured exposed bricks, which are matched in colour to the existing residential buildings forming the courtyard and in materiality to the church of St. Gabriel. The polygonal ground plans of the new buildings create new, differentiated plaza spaces that rezone the courtyard in a variety of ways. The project stands out as an example of courtyard development whose structures create exciting plaza spaces with the existing buildings and also correspond in an exemplary manner with the appearance of the neighbouring listed building through the extremely high-quality façade design as exposed brickwork.
